The female gaze

The female gaze is the male gaze but the roles are reversed. No theorist claims it but it comes part of the male gaze. With the male gaze, the women are the ones that are being objectified and being seen through the male eye. With the female gaze its the men that are being objectified and is seen through the female eye. The same camera work is used for the female gaze; the tracking of the body focusing on the usually topless male then back to the reaction of the women seeing this image. The theory is used in advertisements, music videos are film.

On going weekly production diary - What did you learn this week?

This week we produced a preliminary task in the form of a lyric video based on the lyric video forsubterranean homesick blues. This lyric video is different to others and may just have started a revolution in the lyric video world. Instead of having all the lyrics on screen, they instead used the last word from each line. We were put into pairs and given a song to create lyrics to - The Vamps Last Night.  From doing this we learnt that it is very difficult to film a lyric video with poor signal for the song to play, the challenges of using large pieces of paper and swapping to the next word and then the challenge of pausing the music and filming in order to prepare for the next part of the song. Over all I thought it was a good learning experience and we now know some of the difficulties of making a video.

Lyric video challenge

These 6 videos once edited will complete our lyric video challenge. We had 6 videos because we had to keep cutting at certain points to get the lyrics in order. We realized that using large pieces of paper made things a lot difficult and the lack of signal in the corridor we were filming in made things even more difficult.

Lip Sync Video

This is my lip sync video for the song Foundations by Kate Nash. We filmed it on the mac so it was easier to transfer to Premiere Pro. We had to place both the track mp3 and the video together on Premiere Pro and we deleted the sound off the video so we could overlap it with the actual mp3. The hardest part about this was trying to sync the mp3 and the video together perfectly. As their is an intro to the song it is more difficult to match it up as you have to find the point on the video in which you begin to lip sync and to the point where Kate Nash begins to sing.

Richard Dyer

Richard Dyer born in 1945 is an English academic specialising in cinema.

He believes that the terms 'pop performer' and 'pop star' have become interchangeable. The difference between the two is that the pop performers are simply known for performing pop music. Pop stars are known for having an identity or a certain persona which is not necessarily restricted to just their musical talent. If a performer was described as a star, it would only be because it was done by their management via placing certain stories in the press.

Pop stars have an advantage over film stars in that their constructed image  is much more consistant over a longer period of time whereas an actor's representation is not so consistant over a period of time.

Dyer's star theory stated that pop stars are constructed and manufactured by their record label in order to make money. They have their own unique selling point which helps us the audience hold on to their attention. For Justin Bieber it was the iconic hair and hoody, Kanye West had the gasses and Britney Spears had the school girl outfit. These stars are manufactured to serve one purpose;to make money.

On- going weekly production diary - What did you notice about the video timelines?

This week we studied four different timeline artists from the 80's all the way to the present years. By studying the different style of music over time i've learnt that  as the decade moves on the genre of music and the music videos themselves become a lot more distinctive to that specific genre. Also what they include in the music videos have progressed and artists aren't afraid to push boundaries because we know that something controversial can create a lot of speculation which just means more publicity for the artists.  I also noticed that in the more recent decades, the music itself is no longer just one genre or for one specific type of audience. Artists are aware that targeting just one audience isn't going to make them any sales.
